Flags
start to fly, we look to the west
Ripples on the water, waves start to crest
The hustle begins; it’s time for the test
Outhaul, downhaul, lets rig our rig best
We wade to our knees, some to
our waist
Tilt our mast to the wind; find a puff to our taste
We pull and we step, for this moment we raced
Feet in straps, hook in, time to make haste
We fly on the wind, like an
eagle does soar
We tack and jibe, we always want more
Playing this way all day, we smile galore
It’s the fun in the sun we’ve been searching for

Don and Amy vacation in Bonaire
(and meet up
with some local hotshots)
By, Don Ezernack
Bonaire Feb 17-26, 2007
Wow, Bonaire is a slice of heaven for windsurfers, snorkeling and divers. This is an island that can still offer an uncultured, unspoiled, adventure. The windsurfing has all levels but the shallow waters seem to attract everyone. Our winds ranged from 18-20mph one day but when a rainstorm came in we were on 4.5’s for 30mph + winds. Amy mostly used a 4.5 and I a 6.0-speed was the need for me. Jibe City is the name of the windsurf rental company and I know why. It is a perfect place for learning Jibes and freestyle sailing since the water is so shallow, it is easy to get back on the board. For more information on Jibe City you can find them at www.jibecity.com . Amy really worked hard everyday on making the carving jibe. Bonaire does not have the rolling swell, but is more like our Bahia on a 6.0 day for me. We were fortunate to meet a local champion named Tonky. The three brothers: Tonky, Taty, and Choco are talented windsurfers bringing home multitudes of medals. The trio paved the way as windsurf ambassadors for Bonaire. Bonaire accommodations are excellent. This Island offers the deluxe resort accommodations like the Plaza resort. But most windsurfers stay in private homes or apartments like Happy Holiday Homes. We found this property to be warm, friendly, and very, very clean. You can check them out on their website at www.happyholidayhomes.com.

Dinner at La Piñata – by Dan Copper
We had an informal club gathering at La Piñata Restaurant in Old Town on March 10th. La Piñata is a quaint Mexican restaurant with many separate dining areas, small ones and smaller ones, and one room, upstairs, that was large enough for almost 50 people. I would guess that we had close to thirty people show up, some paid memberships, thank you. It was a fun event; it’s nice to see friends that don’t see so much of each other during the winter season. Many sailors continue to sail through the winter, but many wait until springtime with warmer weather and water. It’s great to be around people where windsurfing topics take predominance and smiles and sailing stories abound. The dinner was dubbed “Meet the President”, who, by the way, never made it because of a minor emergency. The emergency was taken care of and all is well. Some of us are wondering, who is Devon? I know the name but just can’t place a face or sail to go along with it. As the year progresses, I’m sure we’ll discover this information

Meet the President by Dan Copper
Who is Devon? This month we’ll spotlight our President, Devon Boulon.
If you met Devon today, you may know him as your real estate consultant, the person to help you buy and sell your home. He dresses well and is knowledgeable of the topics at hand. Just ask Devon a question and he will point you in the right direction. Real estate is a new chapter in Devon’s life. Success through hard work has been Devon’s style, so success with this new direction seems assured. |
Devon was born on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1982. His dad was a windsurfer so it was no surprise that by 14, Devon was up on a sailboard. By the time Devon was 15 he began to race. At 19, Devon went to live in Maui to train and test with one of his idols, Micah Buzianis. In 2003, with sponsorships by Gulftech, Windwing and F2, and working as their head team rider and chief design tester, Devon won the U.S. National Championship, finished fourth in the World Championships and won the 21 and under World Title. In 2005, he won the North American Championships, the U.S. Open Championships, and the U.S. National Championships. In 2005, Devon also earned the coveted Corpus Christi Bay Sportsmanship Award for his conduct on and off the water, and finished eighth in the World Championships. |
|
|
When asked to name his favorite windsurfing spot in the world, Devon will tell you Margarita, Venezuela, then he’ll think it over and decide that maybe Maui really is the best. His favorite windsurfing spot in San Diego is ‘J’ Street, in Chula Vista, but he also likes sailing Mission Bay. |
|||
When racing, Devon had as many as four to five formula boards and he still keeps boards for slalom, freeride and wave sailing. Devon still races with our SDWA Racing Division, and is always a front runner. |
Devon is currently unmarried without kids, and aside from his real estate business at Century 21, he is still a part of the windsurfing industry. Devon is part owner of Hansen Sails, and looks to continue to be a major influence for windsurfing for years to come. Who is Devon? Who is the SDWA President? All I needed was to ask. |

San Diego Big Winds, a Rare Day! By Don Ezernack
On March 27th local sailors who either had the day off, are retired or left work early, were treated to a west clearing winds of 25-35 mph. It was a g great day to dust off the small sails, boards and rip around the bays here the way we wish it was more often. Well, I do not want to gloat anymore, so see you on the water, the season has begun |
Comments
If you ever want to know what people talk about when they say 'it was a 3.7 day' - Tuesday afternoon I was always powered and sometimes overpowered on a 3.7 and a 66L wave board at Tourmaline. If that's global warming I like it! - Andrew C.
Global warming is happening in some regions of the world and maybe SD is headed toward a Corpus Christi like climate! Hot and WINDY! - Tony W.
