Dakota Summer 2012

2012 is a year of changes, I sold my home in Spring Valley, the people who bought it totally gutted the interior right down to the studs, kitchen, bathrooms and everything.  I hope whoever ends up living there enjoys the space as much as I have.

I've moved to New Mexico at the invitation Scott & Iris.  It's been like a vacation, hot sunny days, kayaking the different lakes and the Rio Grand, especially with Dakota coming for his Summer vacation.

Dak, the man in Black - 2012

It's been great getting to know Scott again, we were best friends as teens but that was a long time ago.  Scott has served this country and saved many lives, I'm very proud of him.  He's soft spoken and gentle and loves his family, friends and their pets are healthy and spoiled.  Scott's wife, Iris, aside from being the best cook I can comprehend, is also a terrific gardener/landscaper.  Her plants look better than the ones the rest of us buy at the store, not the other way around.

Scott is pretty elusive for photos but I caught a good one here below

Scott has many talents and he's sharing mountain climbing
expertise with Dakota during the amazing Summer of 2012

Check out the YouTube videos below of some of our kayak adventures and the one of Dakota's first rappel

I'm waiting for the Winter season to come and I'd like to try skiing again, it's been a long time.  I also can't wait till my shoulders are back in good enough shape to windsurf, hopefully next Summer.  I plan on being a strong swimmer again.  It's been nice to hike in the mountains, climb and rappel, to kayak the lakes and different spots on the Rio Grand River.  The best so far was the welcome from Scott and Iris in New Mexico and Dakota's visit.  I love my dog S'Kia and the other house pets in the home, Navidad the Yorkie, and the kitties, Plumpkin, Warf, Cougar and Annabelle.

I messed up embedding Copper's Kayak 101 so click here for a visit

After moving to New Mexico in 2012, Summer held some kayak adventures, most of which S'Kia came along.  When Dakota came to visit for his Summer vacation, we Traveled to several nearby lakes and the Rio Grand River.  The picture to the right was getting ready to leave Lake Abiquiu in northern New Mexico.  We had 4 kayaks in the water and the 2 man kayak had Scott and both dogs.  A somewhat hot day, a wonderful picnic lunch, a thunderstorm, and a sacked out puppy.  The kayak rack on my trailer broke just as we were leaving, and some rope and bungee engineering sufficed to bring us home.  I devised a new rack system and Dakota and Scott helped me bring it to reality.  Now my kayak trailer is better than before.  WooHOO!

It feels so nice to be around family, it's been far too long, Scott & Iris have made me feel very much at home here

Hi, I'm Daniel Copper, I usually go by Dan Copper, Dan, Dad, ravenous or just "Hey You".
My world is full of music and adventure, even if the adventures come from a book or computer game.  I'm tall and slim, slender rates a smaller body type, I'm not little, 200 pounds of slim.

In 2009, the cumulative injuries to my shoulders took another turn for the worse.  My right shoulder, while not having full range of movement doesn't hurt so much as it used to.  But my left, oh wow!!!  The pain involved on that one is extreme, not hanging at my side, but if I reach.  This is updated now and is November 2010.
YRC, where I work, claim it isn't a work related injury, though they know better, so now I have to have a lawyer to see that I get medical treatment.  I took care of it myself until my insurance was cancelled.  This legal stuff takes time, so I sit at home, and wait.  I've never had time before, always busy, now, I have too much time.
I have frozen shoulder, my physical therapist thinks there is something else going on as well.  One day I hope to know for sure.
It's a waiting game, now, and I pay the price.  What will be, will be.  Just deal with it...  Right?

S'Kia born 6/20/8

S'Kia (Sa-KEY-a)

How could I have ever considered not having a pet. When Kirby (pictured below), died in 2008, for a long time, I wondered if I should get another pet, and if I did, when?

It just seemed that I could still feel her in the room with me, if I backed my chair away from my desk, I looked to see that I didn't run over her paws, tail or nose (she was a yelper).  Finally, after a couple of months I knew it was time again, and researched for non smelly, quiet, semi-large dogs.  I finally choose Siberian Husky.  A million things almost prevented me from this as I tried instead to find a pound puppy.  After a few days of disappointment I decided to stick to the plan and pulled out a newspaper.

I am so happy I did.  Closing on Xmas 2010, He's two and a half now, and he is my best friend.  He makes me laugh everyday.  He doesn't smell at all, that I can tell. He doesn't make any noise at all, no barking, not even if someone comes to the door.  He has a doggie door so he's free to come and go as he chooses.  He will occasionally yip, a single playful one, once a week or so, but only after I have stopped playing with him and he still thinks the playing is going on, and he tells me so; so cute.  He sits on stairs, or he'll lie under my desk or chair, he won't even yelp if I run over his toes with my chair, poor cutie pie, I still look, he can move fast though.  He's pretty feisty and likes to play rougher than any other dog I've had.  He doesn't draw as much fun blood from me any more, but now and again...  I can hide from him and when he searches for me, he can always see me peeking and stops still at that point, and uses his wolf stare, which is intense.  If I was sneaking into a place and came across that stare...  lol, he loves everyone but he does play a little rough, so I pay attention when he is around little kids.

For Christmas 2009, I can add insult to injury, at least illness to injury.  Two days before my son Dakota was to arrive for his Xmas vacation, I was stricken with pain.  The center right side of my back developed a gigantic pain, at least that big, huge.  I also hurt on my right side and the center of my chest in front.  I couldn't breathe except for the tiniest breaths.  I couldn't lie down at all, I couldn't breathe if I did.  I knew if I went to the hospital they would keep me, it was Friday, the one before Xmas, Dak arrives on Sunday.
What do I do, I live by myself, I had for years.  I finally decided to wait it out and sat for the two days before Dak arrived.  I slept in a chair, fully dressed with coat and hat, heat didn't work either.  I left the door unlocked, phone by my hand, and I waited to die.  I didn't.
My son arrived, I spent the Xmas week in the hospital with a Pulmonary Embolism (blood clot in my right lung).  It was a bad bad adventure, I may write the whole story soon, I'll see.
My best friends Dave and Kathy invited my 15 year old to spend Christmas Eve with them while I was hospitalized, I love you guys.  Pam visited, bringing Dak, thank you so much. and Craig visited, Thank you.  Recovery seemed 6 months for me, hard to say, my insurance ended, so treatment ended, come what may.

the funny thing is that Dakota wasn't originally in this picture, I did photo magic.  Look at Kirby's cute little glowey eyes.  This was a vacation to the Sequoia National Forest in 2003.  We spent that vacation with Craig and Terri Chappell and their family.  It was a hugely fun vacation but my motorhome almost didn't make it, it overheated trying to climb the mountain and it took a few days to get there.  we were close enough so that I could unload the jeep and get to our friends campsite while the motorhome was getting fixed.  Nothing like being stranded with a full kitchen, electricity and plumbing, almost like a vacation anyway.

Dan learns to windsurf

It's all about adventure

The years roll by and my interests have come and gone.  My passion for skiing has waned with distance and cost.  My bicycles hang around in the garage, not forgotten, well, maybe.  I had a sloop (sailboat) for a few years, and a dune buggy, and a couple motorcycles.  Jeeping and Windsurfing became my passions for a bunch years till my shoulder injury made it impossible.  Seems I'm back to taking it slow, hanging around the house and playing computer games and reading for entertainment.  I can't wait to windsurf again, and camp, and let the adventure continue.

Kirby Copper 1993 - 2008

"Trip", my German Shepherd, kept my heart warm for eleven years. "Ripley", my Gordon Setter, for nine, and cutie "Kirby", just shy of fifteen.  New warmth now beginning for S'Kia and hoping for many long happy years

Camping, now that's stuck with me over the years and it has really evolved.  I started  camping by loading the back of the Supra and heading to the Colorado River, rather, "The Wash".  By the mid eighties, I discovered four wheel drive, and rediscovered camping.  I just love Mother Nature, and her call, a siren song to me.  I'm currently on my fifth four wheel drive vehicle and my tent's been replaced by a motorhome (the tent's stored inside).  The picture up top is my first motorhome, my current motorhome is only slightly smaller, and a lot nicer. 8^))

Dakota - 2005

Since 2000, the games have been off road jeeping, kayaking, sailing and windsurfing.  It's really funny how one thing leads to another.  After a few years of only off roading, and lots of it, I bought my motorhome, Dinky (37 foot Bravo, named after Dinky Creek, kind of a play on words, as the motorhome was anything but) to tow the jeep.  Instead of towing my jeep over the mountains, I started towing boats to the bay.  Low and behold, I started Kayaking, which gave me the urge to sail and another sailboat, which brought me to the place of the windsurfers.  Need I say more, fun, fun, fun.  Windsurfing!  Then, I had troubles with my motorhome's frame, which led me to sell it and get my present one.  named Whistler, just a portable beach house.

For the most part, 2007 was an interesting year.  It was the year I broke up with Pam, we were engaged and had been for more than a year.  She was a tiger and I loved her a lot, but when she got angry. sometimes she would get too angry.  I couldn't and wouldn't take it.  I guess I don't have the chizpah for relationships.  Too many times I feel it's over, it's over, it's over, Oh! it's not!  I'll take highs and lows, over off and on, any day.  As much as I loved my Miss Adventure, I had to get away.  My rule this year has become; no relationships, friendship only.  I like having a lot of my own time when I want to be alone.  I have many good friends during my windsurfing days.

I still head to the bay and blast when I can.  My summer vacation with Dakota has been wonderful, nine straight days windsurfing at Lopez Lake really highlights my summer.  I love it there; so much that my reservations are made for next year.  My most important hobbies this year are windsurfing, reading, anything involving a computer, and I love my HD TV with the DVR.  I can record what I want and watch it when I want.  How great is that!  My Jeeping has slowed down and I head for the water; it's closer and it's cheaper.  I eventually sold my jeep, the finicky economy started to kick in.  I owned my jeep almost 10 years and had many good adventures, check out the link below at jeep 4 sale to see some awesome pics.
